Morning Commute Impacted By Downtown Flooding
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Flooding is continuing to have an impact on the morning commute in downtown Pittsburgh.
Rain and snow over the weekend caused the rivers to swell and overflow their banks.
As a result, the 10th Street Bypass was shut down around 9:30 p.m. Sunday by PennDOT.
A section of River Avenue on the North Shore has been closed and part of the trail is under water.
Commuters looking to park at the Mon Wharf may not be able to access the lot for the entire work week. While the river may drop below the Mon Wharf's flood level, crews will need time to clean up the area.
"We've had an inch to two inches of rain across a broad area," said Bill Drzal, of the National Weather Service. "It's a large area to get that much rain in, but it's not unheard of. It is our flood season."
At 7 a.m., the Ohio River was at 24.17 feet. At 25 feet, the area of the Parkway Central known as the Bath Tub, starts to take on water.
Early projections showed the river could reach 25 feet by 7 a.m. and it's expected to crest around 25.5 feet later in the day.
