More Locals Targeted By Thieves Posing As Workers
WASHINGTON COUNTY (KDKA) – A local woman has a warning after being scammed.
The Washington County resident didn't want to be identified, but says she was robbed by thieves posing as workers.
"Don't ever say it will never happen to you, because they can be so real and so well educated on what they're going to do that they can fool you," she said.
She's speaking from experience after a woman posing as a land surveyor came to her Chestnut Street home in Washington, asking to take a look at the property. The victim was with her husband standing in their garage.
"I looked at her and she's Mexican, very intelligent, very clean looking and she said, 'I'm here from the survey,'" she said.
Dressing the part, the scammer wore a hard hat and gloves, saying she was from the Keystone Group. She also knew details about whom the couple recently sold their house to, so when the scammer asked to see the property line, the regularly vigilant couple obliged.
"We had our backs turned and we were talking to her and she was on the phone and said you know, we're gonna come back next week," the victim said.
It was during that short period of time, an accomplice went into the couple's home – stealing cash and all of the woman's jewelry. The most important thing was her wedding rings – just days before the couple's 68th anniversary.
"It was special, because there was so much feeling, so many memories with that ring," she said.
