Moon Twp. Fire Leaves 1 Man Dead
MOON (KDKA) – Crews battled a deadly fire in Moon Township overnight.
Firefighters were called to the Casablanca Apartments on Clinton Road around 12:30 a.m.
The fire quickly went to three alarms, as flames shot through the roof of the three-story building.
Moon Township firefighters returned to the apartment building after the fire reignited between the ceiling and the roof.
One man in his early 50s was found dead.
He has not been identified.
Troy Thornhill lives directly below the second floor. He regrets not being able to help his neighbor.
"He never hollered fire ... I couldn't get upstairs to get him," he said.
Thornhill says he heard noises coming from the apartment around 12:30 a.m., then the alarm went off. He and neighbor David Consala went to check on the man and tried to kick the door in. Thornhill is the maintenance manager and was able to get a key.
"Soon as I opened the door, we got blasted," he said. "We even crawled on the ground trying to get him."
The victim's body was found in the living room. It's believed the fire started in the kitchen.
Thornhill and Consala helped the rest of the neighbors escape.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
