Tractor-Trailer Crash Brings Down Utility Pole, Wires In Monroeville

MONROEVILLE (KDKA) – A crash involving a tractor-trailer caused quite a mess in Monroeville Friday morning.

According to officials, the incident happened near the intersection of Center Road and Ruth Drive around 3:30 a.m.

The tractor-trailer brought down a utility pole and some wires. As a result, it blocked both lanes of traffic and knocked out power to many homes.

A normally congested Center Road was blocked after the driver tried to make a right hand turn from Ruth Drive.

"It was about 3:30 this morning, it sounded like a transformer exploding. My middle son who is at work right now, he heard the truck actually hitting it and then backing up and that's when the pole snapped," John Nosbisch said.

The turn isn't one the driver was even supposed to make. Big rigs aren't allowed to cut through the residential neighborhood, but it appears the driver missed the signs.

Huge power outages surrounding the area forced neighbors to get creative with their daily routine.

"It was inconvenient. I had to take a shower by flashlight," Laura Biss said.

Denny Schaal lives along Ruth Drive and said he woke up when the power went out.

"It got a little warm in the house because the air conditioning went out so I went down to see what was going on and here the power was out," Schaal said.

His focus shifted to a fresh crockpot of meatballs his wife had just plugged in for his granddaughter's christening this weekend.

"We were gonna let them cook all night so she plugged them in around midnight and I guess the power went out around 3:30, so I moved them to the stove, but I'm not sure they'll be any good or not. We may have to start from scratch," Schaal said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer didn't appear to be hurt, according to neighbors.

Crews hope to have power restored to all residents by this afternoon.
