Monroeville Hospice Goes Bankrupt, Workers Wait For Paychecks
MONROEVILLE (KDKA) -- A hospice in Monroeville has gone into bankruptcy, and workers who stayed to help transfer patients with the promise of getting paid, say they've yet to see their money.
Rebekah Alvino loved her job in hospice care as she helped people live their final days in dignity. But she liked the job even more when she got paid.
"I didn't get a paycheck today," said Alvino. "It wasn't posted to my account and I wondered why. Apparently, none of us are getting it."
An attorney for the care center says the bank put a lean on the center's accounts. They wish they could pay their employees, but they can't.
"Rent is due today, so I was planning on paying rent and groceries," said Alvino.
A letter sent to employees Friday explains: "First Commonwealth Bank filed a claim stopping the use of all cash. Your presence (at an upcoming bankruptcy hearing) may have a significant influence on the judge's ruling. We will continue our efforts to get the funds released."
"That's not really fair to me that I have to make my way into Pittsburgh. I live in Greensburg, so it's kind of inconvenient," Alvino said. "I'm very angry. I've stuck with this company through all their hardships and I lasted to the very end."
More than 30 employees missed out on getting a paycheck Friday.
The bankruptcy hearing scheduled for Feb. 7. The lawyer for the company tells KDKA's Paul Martino they are going to do everything they can to pay those employees.
