Monroeville Flooding Leaves Drivers Stranded
MONROEVILLE (KDKA) – Penn Hills firefighters took pictures after a heavy rain caused water from a nearby creek to spill onto Old William Penn Highway.
The driver of one van was temporarily trapped by flood waters.
"Though he could make it through the flooded roadway vehicle, ended up conking out, he was stuck in his vehicle five to 10 minutes until we could safely get him out of the vehicle," said Penn Hills Fire Chief Bill Jeffcoat.
Jeffcoat hopes this reminds people about the dangers of driving through high water.
"It's not worth your life or the damage to your vehicle," he said. "The individual that tried driving through here had his vehicle towed away on a flatbed."
Traffic along Old William Penn Highway was delayed while flood waters receded. Water also covered the bridge on McCulley Road, which leads to the SV Temple.
Worshippers say it's not the first time.
"If something happens like this, we are landlocked," said Ratha Nanjundappa at SV Temple. "Tens of thousands of people have no way to come of this, because this is the only entrance and exit to the temple."
The nearly 40-year-old Hindu temple was the first of its kind built in the US. Worshippers show up every weekend from all over the US and Canada.
"We have been asking for improving this bridge for many number of years," Nanjundappa said. "I think it's about they looked at this and provide us the assistance that we need."
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Allegheny County said the county would look into the matter.
