Monaca Officer Faces Alleged Shooter During Trial
BEAVER COUNTY (KDKA) -- A man is on trial, accused of shooting a Monaca police officer after a robbery.
Monday, jurors heard the officer's call for help as he was being shot at.
Damontae Williams, 20, of Aliquippa is being tried on several charges, including attempted homicide and assault on a police officer.
Monaca Police officer Alan Shaffer admitted he had to prepare himself to face the man accused in the shooting.
Shaffer had to listen to the 911 call that was made after he was shot. In the call, he is heard saying, "shots fired, shots fired," and eventually "I'm all right though."
"It brought back some memories and stuff," Shaffer said. "But other that I was able to remain, you know, professional."
He is recovering from a gunshot wound in the thigh. He told the court he knew he was hit, but had to keep going.
The incident started when Williams allegedly robbed a cricket store in nearby Centre Township and drove to Monaca. Shaffer saw a car that matched the description and tried to stop it, but the driver kept going.
Eventually the driver hopped out of the car and ran on foot.
Shaffer chased Williams into a CoGo parking lot and knocked him over with the police cruiser. During the chase, Williams allegedly pulled out a gun and shot at the officer, but surrendered after Shaffer fired back.
The 16-year police veteran said he was prepared for the trial.
"I prepared myself," he said. "I talked with my wife, I talked with my daughters. They support me so, just taking it one day at a time."
Police say they found another gun and drugs in Williams' pocket and that he said he would shoot them if he wasn't in handcuffs.
