Moms Launch Petition To Rid Dyes From Kraft Macaroni And Cheese
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Kraft is taking some heat after two food bloggers from North Carolina started a petition to stop them from using dyes in their macaroni and cheese.
The couple says the food contains dyes Yellow 5, and Yellow 6 which give it its distinctive orange color.
Some studies have linked those particular dyes to allergies, ADHD, and even cancer.
Lisa Leake, and Vani Hari launched a Change.org petition this week, and have already collected nearly 150,000 signatures.
In their petition, the food bloggers say Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in other countries, such as the United Kingdom don't use those artificial food dyes.
They claim the dish, called Cheesey Pasta, gets its color from paprika, and beta-carotene.
Some Pittsburgh moms we spoke to were not surprised by the ingredients, and didn't plan to stop serving it to their kids.
One mom told us, "If given the choice, I might try the white cheddar macaroni and cheese, to see if there is a difference."
In a statement from Kraft, Lynne Galia responded to the bloggers, saying "safety and quality of our products is our highest priority."
The food manufacturer says they know some people prefer foods without certain products, that is why they offer a multitude of products without added colors, as well as products with natural food colors.
