Mike DeCourcy: Pitt Fans Should Be Proud Of Dixon
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) - Sporting News college basketball columnist Mike DeCourcy talked to Vinnie Richichi on Sportsradio 93.7 The Fan, sorts through the aftermath of Jamie Dixon's contract extension, and previews the rest of the NCAA Tournament.
DeCourcy has a message for the Pitt fans who are down on head coach Jamie Dixon, and don't think the school should have extended his deal.
"He continues to coach high-level teams that are extremely competitive in the Big East," DeCourcy said. "If I were a fan of that program, I would be happy. I would be proud that that's my program. I don't know why anyone would be disenchanted with what he's done over the last 10 years."
While DeCourcy recognizes Dixon as one of the best coaches in college basketball right now, he also realizes some of the challenges that Dixon faces as he continues to build the program.

"Pitt is a wonderful university with a great building and a terrific coach. I'm sorry, but that's not unique," he said. "Especially in the region they're in. It's not unique when you go into D.C. or Philadelphia or New Jersey. You're recruiting against a lot of great universities with nice buildings and terrific coaches. So, what's your edge? It would be really nice if Pittsburgh actually grow some basketball players for a change."
DeCourcy also says an upgrade in talent is in order for Pitt.
"Steven Adams has the capacity to be a great player, and I really like James Robinson," he said. "But where are all these great players? The reason they played 10 players is because they didn't have any great ones."
