Memorial Marks 30 Years Since Disappearance Of Cherrie Mahan
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It's been 30 years since Cherrie Mahan went missing from her bus stop in Cabot, but investigators are hoping the anniversary will turn out some new leads.
Mahan went missing in February 1985 after stepping off her school bus in Winfield Township. Her home was only 100 yards away.
Four years ago, police said a person contacted them out of the blue with potentially "crucial" information, but nothing ever panned out.
Now a memorial is planned for Mahan in Saxonburg.
State Police handling the cold case tell the Post-Gazette they're hoping the anniversary will "spur memories," which could lead to tips in the case.
The state trooper who handles Mahan's case says he gets phone calls about the girl's disappearance often, sometimes as often as once a week.
Mahan's family has said over the years that it's been most difficult not knowing what happened to their 8-year-old.
"The not-knowing is what eats you alive every single day of your life," Mahan's mother, Janice McKinney told KDKA back in 2011.
The memorial Sunday will take place at the Saxonburg Memorial Churce from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
