Medical Examiner Identifies Child Killed In Route 28 Crash
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A 6-year-old boy who was killed in an accident on Route 28 has been identified.
According to the Medical Examiner's Office, Elijah Straw, of Aspinwall, was killed in the accident.
The accident happened between RIDC Park and Blawnox around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
A Pontiac Vibe suffered a mechanical malfunction and became disabled in the travel lane. The car was then hit from behind by a Ford F 250 and both ended up in the grass median.
Elijah and his brother were in the back restrained in car seats. His parents and his brother were also taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the pickup truck suffered only minor injuries.
The white pickup truck was registered to Golon Masonry Restoration in West Mifflin.
"We are devastated by what happened. Our driver was not seriously hurt, but he's been suspended pending an investigation," Joe Golon, owner of the company, said.
Elijah was a first-grader at O'Hara Elementary School.
"The Fox Chapel Area school community is deeply saddened by this tragic loss and we extend our deepest sympathies to Elijah's family and friends," Bonnie Berzonski, a spokesperson for the district, said.
