McCutchen Wins NL MVP Award
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen has been named the Most Valuable Player in the National League.
The award was announced Thursday evening. He received 28 of the 30 first-place votes.
McCutchen adds this award to his Gold Glove and Silver Slugger collection.
But the Pirates star says this honor is all about the team.
"It definitely has something to do with it, so I wouldn't have been able to do it without those guys," said McCutchen. "This is not just most valuable player, but for me, I feel like you've got to make that player plural – most valuable players – and that's what it means to me. It's not only my award, it's a team award."
McCutchen was the best player on a team that ended 20 years of losing.
His defense saved runs, his bat produced runs and his speed set up runs.
McCutchen hit .317 with a .404 on base percentage, and a .508 slugging percentage.
He had 21 home runs, 84 RBIs and 27 steals.
McCutchen beat out St. Louis Cardinals' catcher Yadier Molina who hit a career high .319 and won his sixth straight Gold Glove.
Paul Goldschmidt of the Arizona Diamondbacks was also up for the award after hitting .302 with 36 homeruns.
McCutchen is the first Pirates MVP since Barry Bonds in 1992.
And it's been quite a haul of postseason awards for the Pirates.
Pitcher Francisco Liriano is the National League Comeback Player of the Year.
On Tuesday, Clint Hurdle was named NL Manager of the Year.
McCutchen also won a Silver Slugger award along with teammate Pedro Alvarez.
