McCandless Residents Speak Out Against Proposed New Walmart
McCANDLESS (KDKA) -- There was standing room only Monday night at a meeting of the McCandless Zoning Board as it considers a proposal by Walmart to build a store off McKnight Road.
The McCandless Planning Commission has already given the project the green light.
More than 100 people crowded into the meeting room, where Walmart officials made an hour-long presentation, saying the firm would spend several million dollars to upgrade and modernize traffic lights in the area of the new store to help mitigate the expected increase in traffic.
It would also widen some roads, and construct turning lanes.
"What I don't want is grocery stores boarded up, pharmacies boarded up, auto parts stores boarded up," said one resident.
Most of the audience tonight appeared opposed to the project and opponents say despite the fact that they have little time to organize their opposition, they are not giving up the fight.
"We don't really have a store in the north and that's a gap and that's something that shoppers have asked us to rectify," said William Wertz with Walmart.
The Town Board will vote on the Walmart postal next week.
