Mayor Helps Take Armed Suspect Near Aliquippa H.S. Into Custody
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) - A mayor and school superintendent say an armed suspect who was spotted near a Beaver County school before he ran away and dropped the weapon in some woods is now in police custody.
"I was scared cause this is our city and these are our babies," said Aliquippa Mayor Dwan Walker.
The mayor heard the call mid-Monday morning. Aliquippa High School was on lockdown because there was a man on school grounds with a gun.
"My street manager, Sam Cooper, came by and he picked me up and we started riding around, and I said, 'I know the kid; it's one of our babies,'" said Walker.
Walker, a coach turned mayor, knows just about every family in town. He and his twin brother coached them all, so he took a chance the man with the gun was one of his own.
"I stared chasing him," said Walker. "And he was moving, and I screamed his name, and he stopped and he turned."
When he turned, the man with the gun turned. He realized there was nowhere else to run.
Mayor Walker said, "You could tell he'd been running. You could tell he'd been hiding. You could tell he was dirty, but when I said his name he stopped and came right to me."
That's when police took him into custody. The lockdown on the school was lifted.
Quaintai Rains, 18, was arraigned at the Aliquippa Police Department on a list of charges, and transported to the Beaver County Courthouse.
Rains was asked if this was a misunderstanding and he said he knew exactly what happened, but never got the chance to explain.
"It's a village now. I am thankful to God that he didn't shoot so someone," said Walker.
Rains is charged with having a gun on school property.
No students were harmed.
