Maryland Wants To Renew Rivalry With PSU
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Entering its Nov. 1 game at Beaver Stadium with a 1-35-1 record all-time against Penn State, Maryland appeared prepared to force its way into cultivating a rivalry in their 20-19 victory.
Things got testy before opening kickoff as Maryland's captains refused to shake hands with Penn State's during the coin toss. Tempers had flared moments earlier through a skirmish between the teams during warmups.
At his postgame news conference, Terrapins' coach Randy Edsall said he was not proud of the way his team represented itself with the extra-curricular activities, which helped take some of the attention away from Maryland's sixth victory of the season.
"Let me just start off by saying I want to apologize to Penn State fans, to their team, their university for what took place at the beginning of the game," Edsall said. "That is not who we are. Our emotions got the best of us. We've got to be above that."
While the victory was only Maryland's second in 38 tries against the Nittany Lions in the first meeting between the schools since 1993, they now will meet annually as members of the Big Ten.
"Let the rivalry begin now, let it begin," Edsall said. "There should be a trophy for this game. It's a bordering state. Let's have some fun."
