Marcellus Shale Hour: Federal Involvement
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA)- On this week's edition of the Marcellus Shale hour, experts in hydraulic fracturing gave their opinions on the federal government's involvement with natural gas drilling.
According to an editorial recently posted in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the Obama administration wants to begin regulating chemical and flow-back water rules, but Former Secretary of the DEP Michael Krancer and partner in charge at Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. Ken Komoroski says most states are already taking care of those regulations.
When KDKA's Robert Mangino asked Krancer his stance on the matter, Krancer said, "The federal government's involvement would be unnecessary and redundant when the states already have rules for chemicals disclosures and a plan in place for flow-back water. The feds should back off, they have no business in regulating hydraulic fracturing."
Komoroski agreed with Krancer by saying that the state system, especially in Pennsylvania, is already well established and safe.
When asked what the downside of federal regulation would be, Komoroski said, "There would be delays with no benefits because the feds are not nimble."
