Marathon Officials Working With PennDOT To Ease Parkway West Traffic Concerns

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – An estimated 240,000 people are going to be in downtown Pittsburgh this weekend for the marathon.

With the Parkway West outbound being closed, you would think that's going to cause a lot of delays and headaches for drivers.

But, believe it or not, it's actually been carefully orchestrated.

"We worked really closely with PennDOT in the planning process, so we were thankful that they were able to keep the inbound lanes open for all the runners who are coming in bright and early Sunday morning," P3R CEO Patrice Matamoros said.

Friday, starting at 10 p.m., the outbound lanes of Interstate 376 West will be shut down at Green Tree.

Because athletes will cross the finish line at different times, the closure isn't expected to cause too many issues.

Matamoros said the height of the congestion will likely be Sunday around 11 a.m. or noon after the half marathon wraps up.

She said the greater concern will likely be in town.

"Be prepared for traffic, be prepared for parking issues. Look at road closures. We're closing roads down at 5:30 a.m.," she said.

Guy Costa with the City of Pittsburgh agrees.

"Plan on Sunday morning seeing a lot of Downtown being closed for most of the early morning into the early afternoon," he said.
