Man Still Working To Find Killer, 20 Years After His Mother's Murder
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – For the first time in six years, Dan Coyle walked down the narrow sidewalk to the rear apartment off of Fourth Street in Arnold where his mother used to live.
"This used to be a beautiful garden here," Coyle said. "Grapevines was really a nice place 20 years ago. It has changed tremendously."
Things have changed over the years. But one disturbing fact still lingers: police have not arrested a suspect in the brutal murder of his mother Stephanie Coyle. It was on this day 20 years ago on July 16, 1993, that her body was found in the garage apartment.
"A lot of people think time heals, but it doesn't," Coyle said. "This is tough – every year to go through this, but I want to keep it alive. People, don't forget that this happened."
Stephanie Coyle's nude body was found inside the bedroom of her garage apartment. Her throat was cut, she had been slashed a dozen times and then raped and molested after her death.
Since then, Coyle has been on a one-man crusade to find the killer. For years he's been posting signs on telephone poles throughout the Arnold neighborhood asking for help. He says it's all because of a promise.
"I made a promise to her when she was laying in that coffin in the funeral home," Coyle said. "I will never give up, I'm still never giving up. I'm going to keep that promise, that's what I'm here for."
"It only takes that one lead, that one missing piece of the puzzle to solve this case," he continued. "I will keep doing this as long as I can, as long as I live."
Coyle says there's been some leads, but none have yielded results. So he raised the reward to $90,000 for information leading to an arrest. He's asking the public to call Arnold Police or call him directly and he promises complete confidentiality.
"If you don't want to do that, write your tip on a piece of paper, put it on a rock on the expressway, then call me," he says. "I'll get the tip myself, keep everything confidential."
Coyle says his mother was a loving, caring person who would help anyone. He's hoping for a break in the case and to finally keep a promise he made 20 years ago.
