Man Just On Trial For Murder Has Another Run-In With Police

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- East Pittsburgh Police say they had a run-in overnight with a man who was just on trial for homicide.

Police say Leroy Irvin, Jr. led police on a chase just after 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say the initial call came in as a domestic dispute.

Irvin had broken into his ex-girlfriend's home on Bessemer Street, according to police, barricading himself in a room when police arrived.

"He screamed some things out to us," Officer Daniel Foster said, "basically that if we wanted him, we would have to kill him."

East Pittsburgh Police say Irvin nearly hit the two responding officers when he jumped out of window and took off in vehicle.

They lost Irvin during the pursuit.

Police say they later learned that Irvin was recently on trial, charged with the homicide of 17-year-old Chandler Thompson in Wilkinsburg.

The homicide from 2006 had gone cold until 2010 when the Allegheny County District Attorney charged and tried Irvin.

Irvin was found not guilty in the non-jury trial.

Spokesman Mike Manko for the D.A. released the following statement:

Several of our witnesses changed their stories making it difficult for us to sustain our burden of proof. Despite the not guilty verdict, we strongly believe that Irvin was responsible for the killing.

After the incident in East Pittsburgh last night, police say they have an arrest warrant for Irvin.

Nearly two dozen charges were filed against him. Police hope that getting his picture out to the public will help lead to his arrest.
