Man Hospitalized After Crashing Into Monroeville Home
MONROEVILLE (KDKA) – Police are investigating after a man had an apparent medical issue behind the wheel and crashed into a house early Tuesday morning.
According to officials at the scene, the accident happened around 5 a.m. in the 600-block of Greenleaf Drive in Monroeville.
The car initially had stopped at a nearby stop sign, but the next time it came to a halt, it was in the side of the house.
The car's path is easy to follow through twisted shrubs and tire tracks in the lawn. Shattered and fallen bricks and exposed two-by-fours show the point of impact.
"Because of a medical emergency," said Chief Howard Katofsky, of the Monroeville Fire Department. "In this case, we believe the individual came down the side street here, stopped, and people said he started to proceed and all the sudden went into the house."
The vehicles penetration point was an occupied room.
"The individual that lives in the house was sleeping about one foot from where the car impacted into his bedroom," said Chief Katofsky.
Somehow that person wasn't hurt.
"A miracle; somebody was watching out for him," Chief Katofsky said.
The house took a beating. The force of the car did damage from one side to the other.
"We had damage to the rear of the house, inside the house, about every room and there's a giant crack going straight across the house," Chief Katofsky said. "Right now, we're in the process of shoring up the house up. The house has actually moved completely and we want to make sure there's no more damage to the people's property."
Building inspectors are looking into whether the home can still be occupied. The homes residents declined comment other than to say everyone was okay.
Officials say the man taken from the car was conscious and alert. He suffered a broken leg, facial lacerations and injured his chest from hitting the steering wheel.
