Man Hit, Killed In Clairton Pedestrian Accident
CLAIRTON (KDKA) - Allegheny County Police continue to investigate after a pedestrian accident in Clairton left one man dead Wednesday morning.
The victim has been identified as 66-year-old Phillip Maffeo of Elizabeth.
According to officials at the scene, the accident happened along St. Clair Avenue around 9:15 a.m.
Authorities say Maffeo had just gotten out of his car in a downpour, pulled his jacket hood over his head and started to cross the street but not in the crosswalk.
The investigation puts a 55-year-old Clairton volunteer firefighter, whose name is not being released, behind the wheel of the Jeep Patriot that struck Maffeo.
He was on his way to a call, but when the call was cancelled, he headed to the fire station. No one there would comment.
Eyewitnesses told police the driver wasn't speeding and there was a blue, flashing light attached to his vehicle and it was operating.
Maffeo's long-time friend says he got the call at work about the accident and rushed to the scene.
"He got out of his car and they said the guy come down the road and blasted him," the victim's friend said.
Maffeo was rushed to Jefferson Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Allegheny County detectives have taken over the investigation. Their findings will be turned over to the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office.
The district attorney will then determine if charges will be filed.
St. Clair Avenue was blocked off between Fifth and Sixth Streets into the afternoon while police investigated at the scene.
