GARDEN CITY (KDKA) - A fire official said an adult male was found dead after a fire inside a home in the Garden City section of Monroeville.
Firefighters were called to the 800 block of Sweetleaf Drive around 12:45 a.m.
"The fire department arrived and found smoke and fire showing from the second floor," said Allegheny County Emergency Services Assistant Chief Steve Imbarlina.
When firefighters made their way inside the house, they found 41-year-old Chad Dimatteo dead in a second floor bedroom.
"They made entry and started fighting the fire. At one point they discovered that there was a victim inside who unfortunately is deceased," Chief Imbarlina said.
Two other people were inside the home at the time of the fire. They were able to escape safely.
Linda Wurm lives across the street from where the fire broke out.
"Our dog woke us up. We looked out and it was flames coming out to the bedroom," Wurm said.
Neighbors said the family was well-liked and this tragedy has impacted the entire community.
"They were good people and I think Chad, strong person, but he tried to put that fire out and just didn't realize, but his wife and child did get out of the house," Wurm said. "He had been an athlete, he grew up here in Garden City, went to high school in Monroeveille, played college football."
Firefighters said the fire was contained to the second floor bedroom where it started. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
