Man Dies After Being Pulled From Slippery Rock Creek

SLIPPERY ROCK (KDKA) -- Nearly 50 firefighters and divers tried desperately to save a young man who slipped below the surface of the Slippery Rock Creek in Lawrence County Wednesday night.

Rescuers found Mazzarney Sanford, 22, of Butler, in about 20 feet of water in a swimming hole in the Kennedy's Mills area.

He was swimming with a group of 30 other people when he went under.

The 911 call came in at 6:15 p.m.

"Person had gone underwater and hadn't surfaced and there was a group of kids down there, probably 30 plus amount of kids down there in Slippery Rock," said Chief George Johnson, of the Slippery Rock Township Volunteer Fire Department. "There's a swing rope that they swing off of into the Slippery Rock Creek."

Divers found him about 90 minutes later.

Paramedics performed CPR, but the man was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

State police continue to investigate.
