Man Dead After Crash Involving Police Vehicle In Monroeville

MONROEVILLE (KDKA) -- A man is dead following an accident involving a police vehicle Thursday evening in Monroeville.

The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. Thursday on Monroeville Boulevard near Rudy's.

According to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office, 49-year-old Michael Barnes of Monroeville was taken to Forbes Regional Hospital where he died in the emergency room.

The police vehicle involved in the crash was a Monroeville police vehicle.

Little details have been released, but it's believed Barnes was crossing the street when he was hit by the car.

"The early indications are that the pedestrian may have wandered into the flow of traffic," said Allegheny County Police Lt. Andrew Schurman. "Obviously, that's something we're looking into."

One item found at the scene may be particularly important to figuring out what exactly happened.

"We did find a set of headphones at the scene that we believe the victim was wearing at that point," Schurman said. "One of his friends said he would routinely wear headphones when he was walking."

Police also say the area where the crash happened is poorly lit, plus it was raining.

They are waiting on the results of the toxicology tests to see if Barnes had drugs or alcohol in his system.

Monroeville Police are not releasing the name of the officer or commenting on the case.

Reports from the scene indicate that Barnes may have been a maintenance worker at a nearby apartment complex.

Allegheny County Police are continuing to investigate.
