Man Contacts Police After Fleeing Turnpike Crash On Foot
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A man who fled on foot after a crash along the Pennsylvania Turnpike earlier this week has contacted police.
State Police say they know who the suspect is, but are not releasing his name at this time. They say he called them Wednesday afternoon and plans to turn himself in with his attorney by Thursday.
The crash happened shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday when the driver of a tractor trailer spotted another driver coming right at him in the wrong direction.
"Pennsylvania State Police responded to a two-vehicle hit and run crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike," said Pennsylvania State Police Cpl. Joe Sonafelt.
Police refer to the driver of a Toyota FJ Cruiser as 'unit one,' and the driver of the 18-wheeler is 'unit two.'
"Unit one, traveling eastbound, struck the center barrier, spun approximately 180 degrees. For some unknown reason, he started traveling westbound in the eastbound lane," said Cpl. Sonafelt. "Unit two operator, traveling eastbound in the left lane, attempted to take invasive action."
The man behind the wheel of the Toyota struck the truck at mile marker 46.3, about two miles from the Harmar interchange. He then got out of his disabled vehicle and took off running.
"An extensive search of the surrounding area was conducted with the Pennsylvania State Police and the local police department in Harmar and local fire department," Cpl. Sonafelt said.
The suspect was not found, but on Wednesday afternoon, state police say he called and admitted his involvement in the accident as well as to leaving the scene.
He faces numerous charges.
"Hit and run, occupied vehicle, failing to give and render aid at the scene, but that is all undetermined at this time," Cpl. Sonafelt said.
No one was injured in the crash. The driver of the truck is from Germantown, Wisconsin.
