Man Charged With Hitting State Trooper On Route 119 Going To Trial
MOUNT PLEASANT (KDKA) -- A man charged with hitting a state trooper as the officer was picking up debris along a local highway is going to trial.
In October of 2014, after being run down by a motorist, Trooper George Hare asked those trying to save his life, "Am I going to die." Today, he's showing just how far he's come.
"He was able to walk in today with the aid of a cane; he's making some progress," said Westmoreland County Assistant District Attorney Allen Powanda.
Hare was at the preliminary hearing Wednesday for 70-year-old Albert Gundy, of West Mifflin, accused of running him over on Route 119 in East Huntingdon.
"It's clear the state police vehicle was stopped, the trooper was clearing debris from the roadway," said Powanda. "The allegations are Mr. Gundy approached that scene approximately nine miles an hour over the posted speed limit. Upon realizing the vehicle was stopped he veered to the left, crashing into another vehicle, and then striking the trooper."
Gundy, who suffers a number of physical ailments, used a wheelchair to get around at the hearing.
Gundy waived charges of aggravated assault, assault by motor vehicle and recklessly endangering another adult to court. No trial day has been set.
