Man Charged In Fatal East Pittsburgh Crash
EAST PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police have charged a man for a fatal crash that happened at the Westinghouse Bridge early Saturday morning.
Allegheny County police have charged 28-year-old Kevin Anthony Paul, of Stanton Heights, with homicide by vehicle while DUI and multiple other charges, including carrying a firearm without a license
The crash happened on Route 30 near the Westinghouse Bridge around 3:18 a.m. Saturday.
According to a criminal complaint, police determined from the scene that Paul was driving a pick-up truck in the westbound lane of the road when he struck a guide rail, then swerved into the eastbound lanes and hit a sedan head-on. When officers arrived on the scene, the driver of the sedan was trapped in the vehicle, and Paul and a female passenger had abandoned the pick-up truck. The driver of the sedan later died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
The Allegheny County medical examiner's office identified him as 44-year-old Olin Simpson, of McKeesport.
Police say an officer saw Paul and the female passenger walking away from the scene of the crash toward the Westinghouse Bridge. When he approached them in his vehicle and got out, both began to run. They were caught and taken into custody. Paul and the woman were both sent to Forbes Hospital. According to the criminal complaint, officers could smell alcohol on Paul, his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, and he was slurring his words.
The criminal complaint says police later found a firearm on the floor by the front passenger seat in Paul's car, and the serial number had been partially damaged.
Route 30 was closed between Center Street and Clyde Avenue in both directions for about 3 hours while police were on the scene.
