Man Charged After Police Chase Ends Downtown

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A man is facing DUI charges after a police chase downtown.

Two Pittsburgh police cars on their way to the pursuit hit each other on Ninth Street.

"The cop right behind him t-boned him because he couldn't – he didn't have time to stop," Carli Abel, a waitress at Nine on Nine, said.

There were four detectives in the grey unmarked police car. One of them sitting in the back seat was taken to the hospital.

His injury is considered minor.

The officers were rushing to help with a police chase that started in Brighton Heights, down Route 65, then Route 279, then East Ohio Street, across the 16th Street Bridge, down Liberty Avenue and ended at Seventh and Grant downtown when the suspect finally stopped.

The chase started when they tried to pull the suspect's car over for a traffic violation, but the driver, 26-year-old Preston Johnson, was wanted on a warrant.

He's facing charges including DUI, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving.
