Malkin, Morrow Lead Way As Pens Beat Wild 4-1
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- The Penguins remain undefeated in preseason play as four power play goals and another strong game from Evgeni Malkin lifted them to a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild Saturday.
The Pens had plenty of fans in the stands to cheer them on to victory.
The CONSOL Energy Center was filled by thousands of youth hockey players as part of the second annual "Free Game for Kids," in which the Penguins distributed 18,000 free tickets to area youth.
After a scoreless first period, the Pens jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second.
Defenseman Joseph Morrow, the Penguins' first-round draft choice, opened the scoring on a power play in the second period with assists going to Kris Letang and Malkin.
Pascal Dupuis and Brian Strait also added power play goals in the second period.
Malkin, who missed the final three months of last season with a torn ACL, scored in the third with assists going to Letang and Morrow. Malkin, a former NHL scoring champion, now has five points in two preseason games.
Eric Nystrom put the Wild on the board with third-period goal. The Wild had won their first three games of the preseason.
That goal ended Brad Thiessen's hopes for a shutout. But the Penguins' goalie made 16 saves in the win.
For the Wild, Niklas Backstrom made 22 saves in the loss.
Up next, the Penguins hit the road for Kansas City where they will play the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night at 8 p.m.
