Major Construction On Parkway West To Begin Next Week
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - If you travel the Parkway West, get ready for some more disruptions.
A major construction project is scheduled to begin next week.
Crews will be working between Interstate 79 and the Fort Pitt Tunnel. The project is expected to last for months and cause plenty of headaches for drivers.
The $72 million Parkway West improvement project kicked off last year, but the work is far from over.
In fact, this construction season will bring even more headaches for drivers.
"We just appreciate everybody's patience and again, encourage them to slow down, pay attention through the work areas for their own safety and the safety of the workers," PennDOT's James Foringer said.
PennDOT leaders held a public meeting in Green Tree to discuss the plans.
"They had questions regarding the detours and what to expect and I think they have, we got nothing but support from the community for the projects," Foringer said.
The overall project includes milling and resurfacing between I-79 and the Fort Pitt Tunnel.
Plus, there will be bridge preservation and rehab work, drainage improvements, guide rail upgrades, and a lot more.
For drivers, all of that means traffic restrictions mostly during off-peak hours and weekends.
Plus, at least six full weekend closures of the Parkway – three in each direction.
The Fort Pitt Tunnel work alone will cause problems for motorists.
This weekend, the inbound side of the tunnel is scheduled to be shut down completely from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Monday morning.
PennDOT will hold another public meeting to go over details of the Parkway West improvement project on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Carnegie Borough Building.
