Major Back-To-School Deals Expected Over Labor Day Weekend
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – With the kids back in school, here come the sales.
"Because what retailers know is most parents buy before the kids are back in school, so you can get shoes, kids' clothes and all kinds of great deals and great items on sale this weekend," said Dr. Audrey Guskey, of Duquesne University's marketing department.
Target declined to let KDKA into one of their stores Friday, but the store's website gives you a good idea of what its offering: deep, deep discounts. And Target is far from alone.
Check any of the major retailers' websites and you'll see the deals – back to school was a major disappointment.
"Sales decreased by at least 10 percent over last year, so as a result, retailers are frantic to get us into the stores and keep us shopping," said Guskey.
So the sales might surprise you.
"Because the value is going to be 40, 50, 60, 80 percent off a lot of merchandise," Guskey said.
It's not just clothing and summer stock patio furniture. The electronics and housewares stores are also fighting for your dollars and making it worth your while.
"All of our big sales through the year, they have bundled into one week," said Alisha Rector with Best Buy. "So they are just trying to do some customer satisfaction to try to get people to come in around Labor Day."
Big screen TVs are hot.
"Because football's starting up again," said Rector.
But the biggest savings are in the large household appliances, that simply aren't moving as well as retailers need.
"And so the fact they have a lot of merchandise, they are going to drop the prices and it's a wonderful thing," Guskey said. "It's really great deals for customers out there."
There is one asterisk to the Labor Day sales, whether it's at Sprint, the big box stores or Verizon, you are going to be seeing a lot of sales for the iPhone 5 and 4S.
However, Apple is going to introduce its next line of phones around Sept. 10 and probably available before October and when those new phones come out, the current ones are going to get a lot cheaper. So, unless you are impatient, you might want to wait.
