Magee-Womens, West Penn Hospitals Welcome Pittsburgh's First Babies Of 2014
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Magee-Womens Hospital has the honor of delivering Pittsburgh's first baby of 2014.
Tachelle Day gave birth to Mekhi at 1:03 a.m.
"They're like, 'You're the first person to have the first baby on New Year's Day,'" said Tachelle. "And I'm like, 'Are you serious?'"
Does she feel there's something special about being the first?
"He's always going to have a place in my heart because he's my son. But at the hospital, he's the little superstar," Tachelle says.
Eighty-five minutes later, just a couple miles up the road, Pittsburgh's second baby was born. He entered the world at West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield.
Rebecca Knupfer and Matt North say baby Cameron seemed to be in a hurry.
"I felt like I wasn't going to make it here, and I almost didn't," said Rebecca. "The doctor said in about 10 more minutes we would have had the baby in the car."
"The traffic wasn't bad. It just seemed every slow driver in Pittsburgh was out last night," added Matt.
But there was nothing slow about Cameron's entrance.
And Tachelle?
She says she and her family watched TV and celebrated the New Year.
"We all gave each other hugs and kisses, and said happy New Year's to each other," said Tachelle.
An hour later, the real celebration began.
