Locals Rally For Gun Reform As Tour Stops In Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It's a 25-state bus tour over a 100-day period and today the bus stopped in Pittsburgh in East Liberty in the Kingley Association parking lot.
The tour is sponsored by Mayors Against Illegal Guns. The platform: no more names national drive to reduce gun violence.
It's a tribute to those who have lost their lives to gun violence and a plea to law makers to support common sense gun legislation.
Gun violence has become almost common place, Friday morning a 24-year-old man was shot and killed in Larimer.
According to acting Pittsburgh Police Chief Regina McDonald, that makes 32 murders in the city this year.
The chief told KDKA's Brenda Waters she supports background checks legislation, as do parents in attendance at the rally who have lost children to gun violence.
Also at the podium was Carlee Soto, the sister of one of the teachers shot and killed at Sandy Hook elementary School in Newtown, Conn. back in December of last year.
"Tragic shootings like the one we had in Newtown opened our country's eyes to the fact that we have a serious problem due to gun violence in America," she said.
Twenty children and six adults were shot and killed in Newtown.
According to organizers, senators Pat Toomey and Bob Casey, along with Congressman Mike Doyle, already support background checks legislation.
Today's rally urged all lawmakers to support what they call a life saving measure.
