Homewood Church Bustling With Volunteers On MLK Day
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Holy Trinity Baptist Church in Homewood was bustling with activity and it wasn't even Sunday.
Lee Baumann of Habitat for Humanity says rehab work on the old building is one of many volunteer projects on the Martin Luther King Day of Service.
"We hope to get people involved in the whole essence of Martin Luther King and what he was about," said Baumann. "And that's service to your community, service to your country, service to the world and people around you."
Volunteers open up six previously unusable rooms as a community resource for young people.
Andrew Dadig of AmeriCorps says everyone just pitches in.
"They want to convert some of this space into workable space that they can use for community programming," Dadig said. "So it's people helping people helping people."
Pastor Lewis Rogers directed words of thanks to the volunteers who gave up their day for his church.
"Has to be something within that you're giving," Rogers said. "The lord teaches us it's more better to give than to receive – and you put it into action."
The building was constructed more than a century ago, as the first American nursing home for African American women. Service to the community has continued ever since.
