Locally Produced Doritos Ads Have Super Bowl Aspirations
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Doritos is once again hosting a Super Bowl commercial competition and a local submission is in the running.
"Yo, pass me the Doritos!"
With those words, an actor in the role of Heinz Field tailgater kicks off a 30-second commercial. Two local actors and a videographer hope their entry is among 10 winners, guaranteeing a pass to the Super Bowl in Arizona.
Paul Martinez shot the video, starring his fiancé and co-owner of Cavo nightclub, Leah Surmacz, and a club DJ who goes by the name "Mad Mike."
"I was just the 'hot girl' that caught the attention of the tailgaters as I walked by," Leah says.
Paul says the storyline is "for her to pretend that her foot's stuck in a grate, but not give it away, so it appears she's dancing, and people really wouldn't see the end coming."
Since they only had one camera, the two actors played their roles separately.
"For most of it, it was just me standing there with a camera in front of me, just like right now, looking off at nothing, or at people staring at us," Mike recalls.
Initially, they shot their video on a Friday. Everybody was wearing Steelers gear. Then, they went home and read the contest rules. No logos allowed, except for the Doritos bag.
"We had to re-film it the next day," Paul says.
"Paul calls me like Saturday or Sunday at 8 a.m., it was like, 'Hey, we gotta do it again,'" Mike recalls.
"It was freezing, and I was in a small dress," Leah adds. "And every take, I'd throw a coat on."
Six thousand entries will be narrowed to 10. Online voters will decide who gets the million dollar first prize.
Leah has her fingers crossed.
"We're hoping to get Pittsburgh to the Super Bowl, one way or another," she said.
They hope to come through when the chips are down.

They're not alone though, a Clarion University student also has Super Bowl commercial aspirations.
Joe Bucci is from Findlay Township and his goal is to be a producer. He created the commercial below and also submitted it to Doritos.
A total of 10 finalists will be selected by the company. All 10 will be invited to attend Super Bowl XLIX in a private suite. The eight whose ads don't air during the game will win $25,000.
Last year, they received more than 5,400 entries.
