Local Students Pause To Remember 9/11
SHADYSIDE (KDKA) – Students from Sacred Heart Elementary School in Shadyside gathered Friday morning to remember the unforgettable events of Sept. 11.
Most of the young faces weren't even alive on Sept. 11, 2001, but they understand, like only the innocent can.
"It was like really sad and a lot of people died," 8-year-old Betsy Schmeler said.
Older students have vague memories.
"I remember that I was in daycare, down my street. I distinctly remember my parents coming in and picking me up, and they [were] just sad," 14-year-old Josh Frey said.
What these young people don't know is what life in America was like before everything changed.
"I can't even think about that. I mean everything is so much more complicated, now that there is war. Everything is just all mixed up," Frey said.
Despite the fears of these days, the students say they still feel safe in their homeland.
But they wonder what we all wondered that day.
"I just like wonder what kind of people would do something like that," 13-year-old Claudia Hebert said.
