Local Students Participate In National Walk To School Day
HOMEWOOD (KDKA) - Nothing kicks off the school day like a parade and today in Homewood, lots of local students participated in the Walk to School Parade.
The goal of the parade is to encourage more students to walk or bike to and from school in a safe environment.
"It's a way to empower the community, the children," Homewood Children's Village Site Director Detria Dixon said. "we're going to make it safe to walk to school."
"It brings a sense of safety to our children, letting them know, teaching them how to cross the street, letting them know what safe routes are in Homewood for them to be able to walk. It's also helpful to the parents because the parents truly care about their children and want to make sure they get to school safely. So, it's just very helpful.. It just brings attention to the neighborhood of everyone here that we are a village and it takes each and every one of us to be able to help out students," Pittsburgh Faison K-5 Principal LouAnn Zwieryznski said.
The event was part of a bigger National Walk to School Day.
More than 1,000 schools nationwide participated in this year's Walk to School Parade.
