Local Police Officers Honored, Including Fallen K-9 Rocco
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It's not easy being a police officer -- often under siege by the bad guys and then sometimes criticized by those who second-guess their actions.
Amen Corner's annual recognition of outstanding police service attracts hundreds, and KDKA money & politics editor Jon Delano presented the Courageous Act Award to Penn Hills Police Sgt. Ronald Como, who responded to a domestic 911 call.
"When the female victim fled the house, Sgt. Como went to check on her welfare," Delano told the audience. "As he turned back to the home, he faced a terrifying site as he suddenly found himself looking directly into the barrel of a rifle."
"I found myself in a life or death situation, and my training kicked in and I did what I had to do," Como said.
Como shot the perpetrator before the perp could shoot either the woman or the police.
He was among a number recognized for special service, including Allegheny County Police Officer Brett Whittenberger for the Ever Vigilant Award, and the Quick Response Award to Pittsburgh Police Officer Lucas Coyne.
Remember Rocco?
A special award was presented to his partner, Pittsburgh Police Officer Phil Lerza, along with a portrait and the pen used to sign Rocco's Law, increasing the penalty for killing a K-9 officer.
"I can't put it into words. He really deserved it. He was there for me that night. He did his job. I'm glad he got acknowledged this way. It's great," said Lerza.
And the Fraternal Order of Police asked for contributions to erect a Rocco statue next to the existing Law Enforcement Memorial on the North Shore.
"This statue is going to run us approximately $50,000, and we have been soliciting funds and they haven't been coming in very well," noted FOP Lodge 91 Chief Henry Wiehagen.
