Local Man 1 Of 3 Fans In The World To Attend Every Super Bowl
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - Back in 1967 at the Los Angeles Coliseum, Tom Henschel, a native of Harrison, Pa., attended the very first Super Bowl. On Sunday, he will continue his streak of being in the stands for all 49.
Henschel is one of only three fans in the world who have been to every championship game and he joined the "KDKA Morning News" with Larry Richert and John Shumway from Arizona to talk about his streak.
KDKA's Rich Walsh Reports:
In 1967, Henschel spent $12 for his ticket. This year, he is paying $1,500.
"The last 17 years the NFL has put me on their VIP list," he said.
This means every year he gets a chance to buy a ticket at face value.
Henschel says he knows the other two guys who have been to every Super Bowl too.
"We've become pretty good acquaintances, but we're not the best of friends because the one guy is a big Patriots fan and the other guy is a 49ers fan. They don't like the Steelers and I don't like their teams," he said.
What Super Bowl is Henschel's favorite? He says that's easy, when the Steelers won their first four championships.
"I always keep going back to 13 and 14 because they were so exciting. Of course, I can't leave out 9 and 10," he said.
Henschel may be 73-years-old, but he doesn't act like it. He says he still goes out late at night to the bars and clubs while he's enjoying Super Bowl week.
"I might spend another two weeks out here (in Arizona)," he said.
Who does he want to see win on Sunday?
"I gotta go (with) the Seahawks I cannot stand New England. I cannot take them. They get so many breaks," he said.
Henschel says he will go to every Super Bowl until he is unable to and next year, he hopes to be on the field for the coin toss.
"I got a lot of people working on it," he said.
