Local Groups Head To Harrisburg To Protest Budget Cuts
EAST LIBERTY (KDKA) - A group of local faith, community and labor leaders are headed to Harrisburg to protest the governor's budget cuts, which they say are killing the community.
Organizers say cuts to education and a failure to save public transit are destroying the foundations of neighborhoods.
Around 7:45 a.m., part of the group held a press conference at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary before boarding a bus to Harrisburg.
Two other buses left from the Hill House Blakey Program Center and the Bidwell Presbyterian Church.
Last night, Gov. Tom Corbett addressed the issue of education cuts saying it was a top priority for the state. As it stands, education receives over 40 percent of the share of the budget.
Previously, Corbett has said that the Port Authority needs to bring some good ideas to the table, but should not expect a state bailout this year.
Local protestors will deliver their demands for help along with 1,500 postcards to save public transit.
They will also deliver letters from concerned parents and students about the proposed education cuts.
