Local Grandmother Injured, Frightened After North Side Robbery
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A local grandmother who was tackled, knocked to the ground and robbed is worried the thief may target other victims.
The 61-year-old talked to KDKA's Kym Gable. She doesn't want her identify known.
The woman was walking on the North Side Tuesday morning. She just withdrew cash from an ATM and was headed to Giant Eagle on Pressley Street.
"And all the sudden I was down on the ground," she told KDKA's Kym Gable. "He was fast, like a football player tackling me, only faster... and I was down on the ground and I couldn't really think what happened. I thought, oh he ripped my purse off."
The attack happened right in front of the Pressley Ridge Apartments and lasted only seconds.
"He was just like that, across the street, and he was gone and I got a glimpse of him, and that was it," she said. "Leads me to think, oh my goodness, this guy really is a professional criminal or something."
The woman has broken bones in her arm and severe bruising on her arms, legs, torso and face.
The surveillance cameras on the high-rise captured some of the assault. Her purse was later found nearby. The handles were completely ripped off, and all her money was gone.
She says police at Zone 1 and staff at Allegheny General Hospital have been a comfort as she recovers.
"They did x-rays. There's a break in here somewhere. I got to go back to an orthopedic surgeon. And the police [officer], he stopped back with my purse and I couldn't have been treated any better," she said.
The victim says the assailant was a young black male wearing a white tee-shirt. Pittsburgh Police have not yet released that surveillance footage.
