Local Contractors Busy Fixing Water Problems

BETHEL PARK (KDKA) -- Rivers and streams are overflowing their banks because of all the rainfall in the area.

The wet weather is also causing flooded basements. Pumps and waterproofing crews are working overtime to keep homes dry.

It has been raining headaches for some area homeowners. What seems like non-stop rain the past few months is draining off in basements and in some cases causing flooding.

"I would say in the last three months, I would say at least a thousand phone calls – people having water seepage or structural foundation issues," Brian Baker, of Baker's Waterproofing, said. "People calling and explaining how many inches of water they have filled up in the basement."

A home Bethel Park did not have inches of water sitting in the basement, but there is a problem. Scott Pinkney's mother lives there. He says there have been water problems over the years, but this year is different.

"This year with all the rain, it just seemed to get worse and worse and she finally decided she had to do something about it," he said. "The tiles were starting to buckle and along the bottom of the wall there was some deterioration of the paneling and it was evident there was a water problem."

The owner of Baker's Waterproofing says there are some things homeowners can do to avoid problems. Walk around your home, know what's going on. Is rain water overflowing from your gutters? If so, they need to be cleaned out and check your basement for damp spots or sitting water.

If a crew has to come out, it could cost you anywhere from $1,500 to $15,000.
