Local Man Invents Smartphone Mount As Cheaper Alternative To GoPros
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- More and more people are using GoPro cameras to capture action video.
But a local company has come up with a cheaper alternative, using equipment you probably have: a smartphone.
Dave Rost says he was skiing out West and didn't want to spend a couple hundred bucks on a GoPro, "So I held my iPhone 4 and filmed, which wasn't exactly that useful because my hands got awfully cold."
So he says an idea was born.
Rost created Readyaction, a line of mounts and braces that can hold any type of smartphone.
You use the braces to strap your smartphone to your chest or to your forehead.
"Once you get used to it, it's going to film where you're looking," said Rost.
Using a suction cup device, you can mount the phone to most anything.
He also makes mounts that attach to tablets so someone could carry the tablet at work hands-free or attach it to the back of a seat in a car so a child in a backseat can use it.
Many, but not all of the products, are made at NZK Plastics in Turtle Creek.
They range in price from $20 to $60 and are sold mostly online.
