Local Colleges, Universities Among Nation's Best In Latest Rankings
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The 2013 edition of the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings is out, and some local universities and colleges once again made the grade.
Among the top 200 Best National Universities, Carnegie Mellon University ranked first among local schools at No. 23.
Penn State (main campus) came in at No. 46, and also placed No. 13 on the magazine's list of top public universities.
The University of Pittsburgh ranked No. 58 on the overall list, and No. 19 among public universities.
Duquesne University came in at No. 120, and West Virginia University was No. 165.
National Universities are typically large institutions that focus on research and grant bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees.
Harvard University and Princeton University remained tied for the top spot in this year's National Universities list
US News also ranked the top 200 National Liberal Arts Colleges, which are schools that emphasize undergraduate education and grant at least half their degrees in liberal arts majors.
Among them, Allegheny College in Meadville, was the top local college at No. 82, Washington & Jefferson College ranked No. 90, Westminster College No. 124, Grove City College No. 133, and St. Vincent College No. 145.
Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. was once again ranked as the number one liberal arts college in the country.
US News and World Report bases its rankings on such things as freshman retention, graduation rates, and the strength of the faculty, plus 16 so-called "indicators" of academic excellence.
