Local Businesses Cash In On Busy Sport Weekend
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It was a busy and exciting sports weekend in Pittsburgh, and our region is cashing in on the crowds that flocked to the CONSOL Energy Center and PNC Park.
This weekend was about more than just the Pirates taking two out of three games against the Boston Red Sox.
"Our expectation was to come and win three games, but now we gotta try and get one out of three," Tom Santos, a Red Sox fan, said before Sunday's game.
With fans at PNC Park breaking attendance records on Saturday, then breaking the new record on Sunday and the Ultimate Fighting Championship bringing its mixed martial arts display to the CONSOL Energy Center for the first time ever, Pittsburgh was a sports lover's dream and a business owner's bonanza.
"It's been fantastic. You can really tell a new energy. We get a lot of players and stuff in here. We know that they are really excited," said Karen McConnell, the manager of SoHo on the North Shore. "They're playing like I've never seen them."
Although a lot of the fans at PNC Park were out-of-towners, Red Sox fans say it's easier to get a baseball ticket in Pittsburgh than it is in Boston. That's all extra money in the local registers.
As for UFC fans filing into the arena, they came from far and wide and they were spending lots of money, too.
"Probably by the end of the night, we'll spend like $350 to $400," said one UFC fan.
