Local Boy Collects Blankets For The Homeless
NORTH SIDE (KDKA) - Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks and spend time with family, but it's also a time to lend a helping hand to those in need.
A young boy from Mars did his part by handing out blankets to the homeless on Thanksgiving.
After driving through the North Side a while ago and seeing some homeless people who looked cold, he decided to collect blankets for them.
He ended up collecting 500 blankets and passed them out with help from his mother and grandmother.
They rented a van, stuffed it with as many blankets as they could and drove to Pittsburgh to distribute them.
"I think it's [kind of] sad that they have to live like this. They don't have Thanksgiving dinners or they don't have anything," John Jackson said. "I think it helps them think that someone really does care about them."
Jackson calls the project "Keep Yinz Warm."
They could only get 350 blankets in the van they rented, but made a return trip to distribute the rest later.
Jackson hopes to collect blankets again next Thanksgiving, but instead of 500, he's hoping to collect 1,000.
