PITTSBURGH (NEWSRADIO 1020 KDKA) -- Local astronaut Mike Fincke has been on the space shuttle and commander of the space station, but now he is starting a new chapter of his life - post-shuttle program - as NASA reconfigures its future.
"Just because we're stopping the space shuttle program doesn't mean the American space program is gone or that NASA's out of business; we still have a strong space program with the International Space Station," said Fincke
The astronaut joined KDKA Radio's Larry Richert and John Shumway on Wednesday to talk about what he's doing now that the shuttle program has ended, as well as his current mission to educate kids across the United States.
Fincke said he's exited for the future in his field.
"That's why I'm excited because as we get more and more people with this private industry, hopefully, you know... everyone can take airplane rides, everyone can take rocket rides in the future," he said. "I want [you] all to see what I have seen. We have that most beautiful planet in the whole solar system and just to watch the earth go by at 17,000 miles an hour is just absolutely incredible."
