Lifeguard Supervisor Charged With Sexually Assaulting Teenage Employee
UPPER ST. CLAIR (KDKA) -- A lifeguard supervisor and former school employee is facing sexual assault charges for alleged inappropriate contact with a teenage employee he oversaw.
Police say they have charged 29-year-old Michael Kelly of Castle Shannon with sexual assault, indecent assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, unlawful contact with minors, corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of children.
According to investigators, Kelly was a lifeguard supervisor at the Upper St. Clair Recreation Center and had also been employed at the Allegheny Valley School starting in 2014. He was fired from there on Friday.
The rec center is not affiliated with the school.
Authorities say the alleged incidents happened between 2011 and 2013, but they didn't learn about it until they received an anonymous tip.
According to the criminal complaint, the victim worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the time of the alleged incidents and Kelly was "her direct supervisor."
The two began exchanging calls and texts, the criminal complaint reports, which soon turned inappropriate.
The criminal complaint says in one alleged incident at the rec center, the victim told authorities Kelly asked her to get something from a storage room and he followed her inside where she was assaulted.
The victim also told investigators, according to the criminal complaint, that twice Kelly picked her up at the rec center when she wasn't working and took her back to his home where she was sexually assaulted.
"After that incident, Mr. Kelly picked her up, her being fearful, took her to his house, had sexual intercourse and also oral sex with her," said Allegheny County Police Supt. Charles Moffatt. "At the time of these incidents, the victim was 16 years of age, Mr. Kelly was 26 years of age."
Authorities say the victim's family first went to the Upper St. Clair Police in 2013, but nothing was done until the D.A.'s Office received the anonymous complaint.
Kelly has been arrested and is in jail on $100,000 straight bond. A hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 24.
