Liberty Tunnel Drivers Stuck After Multi-Car Crash
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A three-vehicle accident inside the Liberty Tunnel as the rush hour was winding down Wednesday evening resulted in dozens of drivers getting stuck.
It happened in the outbound tunnel just before 7 p.m.
Tom Kundrat of Jefferson Hills was driving home, nearing the end of the outbound tunnel, when he came to a dead stop. Several cars behind him kept going, and one driver pushed another car beneath Kundrat's SUV.
Both outbound lanes were blocked by the accident, and they had to be shut down, while the accident was cleared.
"I heard a big bang, and I just happened to look up ahead and all of a sudden I saw one car going up in the air and the other two kind of smashing together," witness Keith Huebner, of Whitehall, said.
There were no serious injuries, but dozens of drivers were stuck inside the tunnel for more than an hour. Many shut their engines off, with drivers worried about exhaust fumes building up.
Driver Nathan Musick said he heard a loud explosion, and then saw the three car pileup. He said he got out of car to make sure no one was hurt.
Traffic started moving again around 8 p.m.
