Levelz To Remain Closed For The Next Year
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The owners of Levelz in the South Side will be able to reopen the bar after about a year.
At a hearing Friday, District Attorney Stephen Zappala said the bar will remain padlocked until Aug. 2, 2014 as part of a "restrictive period."
"There are other options for the property for them," says Levelz attorney Charles Caputo. "Maybe without a liquor license for the short term. Hopefully there is enough demand that we'll be able to sell it."
Additionally, the owners will have to hand over their liquor license to the state liquor control board within the next 15 days.
Levelz was first closed down Aug.2. The closure came after police responded to numerous altercations in several months, including most recently, a stabbing and a 30-person fight.
Police say they responded to 33 incidents in the past two years.
"We want to protect good business," says city council member Bruce Kraus. "An empty store front is better than a bad store front. These few problematic establishments paint the entire business strict so the perception of the South Side becomes one of [many] problem establishments."
The owners will be able to transfer their liquor license to another location.
